Burlesque: performance art – or stripping? What are your thoughts?

“Fans of burlesque claim it is an art form, but one London council has classified it alongside lap dancing and stripping…”

This was the opening line to an article we found on The Guardian website online.

From our perspective, burlesque is not only an art form, but its a dance form that empowers women.

Although burlesque involves elements of strip tease, in this day and age, ‘stripping’ is classed as something uncultural and demeaning for women,  however as the article states;

“With its lavish performances and extravagant costumes, it’s hard to associate burlesque with the sleaze of strip clubs.”

Please let us know your thoughts and opinions below.
