BEFORE YOU START
Read the information below to find out what you need to bring
and wear and anything else you might need to know to prepare.
POLE DANCING -
What to bring and Wear
For pole dancing it is essential that you have bare legs so
that you can grip the pole. If you are brave you could wear a short
skirt or shorts. If you are feeling more modest its fine to wear a knee
length skirt that is not too restricting, but you may have to hitch
it up a bit for certain tricks. Please be aware that in some lessons
we will do floor moves where we kick our legs up in the air, so if you
wear a skirt you may want to wear hot pant style knickers underneath.
Wear high heeled shoes or boots, preferable with a sole that is not
too slippery. Very pointed toes are sometimes hard to dance in, and
platforms are too. Wear something on top that you can move in easily
like a vest or tee shirt.
Extra things to bring with you are jogging bottoms and trainers for
the warm up, and you might want to bring a drink of water.
Other Preparation
In pole dancing you often use muscles you have never really
used before because of this a lot of people say that they are really
quite stiff after the first lesson. However it normally seems that by
the second week the body has got used to it and people don't tend to
get too stiff after this. If you want to prepare yourself before a course,
any upper body strength exercise you can do in the gym or at home will
help.
When you first start pole dancing you are likely to get a few bruises
as you knock the pole. As you practice more this stops as your skin
gets resistant to it and your strength and technique develop. If you
know that you bruise easily, or know you are planning to wear a skirt
out there are some treatments that you can get in advance to use straight
after the lesson. Taking zinc tablets helps treat bruises, as does applying
arnica cream, which is available from most health food shops or chemists.
If you feel like you are getting a bit sore during the lesson get your
teacher to check your technique as it may be something simple you can
change.
It's quite normal when you start out pole dancing to get slippery hands,
partly because you are working out and partly because as soon someone
feels slightly nervous the hands tend to get a bit clammy. However about
one tenth of people get really slippery hands and this can make things
quite difficult. Your teacher will have some special hand grip powder
reserved for those in need and just ask her if you want some.
WORKSHOPS
For all of our workshops you just need to wear something that
you can move in fairly easily but feel sexy in. Jeans with a bit of
stretch, for example, are a good thing to wear. Always wear heels if
you can. If you prepare by pampering yourself so that you feel gorgeous
this will help you get into character on the day. You don't need to
bring anything to a lap dance workshop, for seduction dance please check
with us first but you normally need to bring a spare bra and shirt or
cardi (don't worry, no nudity at all, you just need to layer up in order
to take things off) and for burlesque bring a spare shirt or cardigan.
We will supply you with pen and paper to make notes of all routines.
HEN PARTIES
For hen parties you will need the same as above, depending
on your activity. However we understand that you may be going on somewhere
straight afterwards and you may not want carry a change around with
you, so we are a bit more relaxed about what you have to bring and wear.
Our main aim is that everyone feels comfortable when taking part and
we normally find that with hens the aim is just to have a laugh and
have a go really, rather than do it really seriously.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What if I am feeling nervous?
Don't worry, most people feel nervous before their first time pole dancing.
Everyone is in the same boat to start with and it's a new thing to everyone.
The classes have a really fun, friendly and empowering atmosphere and
you will soon be totally at ease.
What if I don't have
much dance experience?
Don't worry, you don't need to have any dance experience at classes taught
for complete beginners.
What if I'm not very strong?
You don't need to be very strong for these classes. It doesn't take a
lot of strength to spin on a pole, you just need to know correct technique.
Spinning will build your strength up to give you the power to do flips
and climb the pole. You could prepare for classes by building up you upper
body strength in the gym or doing press ups at home, but this is not essential.
What if I want to book a course but know I am going
on Holiday and will miss a date?
If you state that you will be missing a certain date before the
start of the course you can have a class in leiu ie: you can make up the
missed class in another course, so that you don't miss out. However please
note that after the start of the course if you do not attend a class for
any other reason than proven physical injury you forfiet that lesson.
What if I don't have anyone else to go with me?
Most of our students come alone, but as it is such an unusual thing to
do everyone bonds very quickly and they are normally all best friends
by the end of the first couple of classes.
I'm worried everyone else will be size 10
and 18 year old prospective pole dancers
Whilst our classes do provide you with good training, should you wish
to make a career in pole dancing most of our participants are there to
get fit and have fun. Only a very small percentage are interested in dancing
professionally. Our participants are from a whole range of backgrounds
and ages.
I'm worried I'm not attractive / young / slim enough.
Don't worry, the great thing about our classes is that there is a wide
range of women of all different ages, shapes, sizes and looks. These classes
are about having fun and getting fit, not what you look like and just
because we are pole dancing it doesn't mean we have to conform to identikit
female stereotypes portrayed in table dancing clubs.
